Securing a natural spring water catchment

Posted by on Jan 5, 2016 in Permaculture | 0 comments

In many parts of the world, improvised communities collect water in streams that are unprotected from pollution and drying during the dry weather. The process of securing these primary sources aims at ensuring that they are free from pollution and that water will be available even when it is very dry.

A spring may be secured by a simple method of creating a watering point and sealing off the adjacent space from pollutants or by use of a more sophisticated technology that allows a mini distribution network using gravity to serve villages downstream.

 Process of securing the spring

The choice of the methods used is dependent on the location of the water catchment area, the flow of the water and the consumption needs that should be met. If the spring is located at a shallow depth, of less than two meters, and if the consumption is less than the flow of the spring, the cheapest method is used. However if the consumption is way above the flow of the spring, a storage tank is needed. If the spring is at a great depth, drainage is needed upstream from the spring.

 Simple method

The simplest method can be applied if the spring emerges by itself and at an adequate flow rate. The method starts by surveying the terrain, water purity, and consumption needs. The spring is cleaned, weeded and terraced until the waterproof layer is reached.

The various streams of water are then brought together in a catchment box. Ditch is built between the spring and the catchment box and filled with gravel to enhance water filtration. The water can be fetched and the exit of the catchment box.

Source catchment

The source catchment method involves changing the catchment box and installing a tank instead. The method is common when the demand for water outstrips its supply. Water is filtered in one of the compartments of the tank and then siphoned off to the distribution network.

1Catchment with drainage over a large area

If the spring diffuses over a large area, the place looks swampy and requires a number of drains to collect the water. The drains created are perforated pipes and buried in the ground to enable water to be drawn through the gravity. When a drain is dug, all the soil surrounding the drain is usually gorged with water and water easily diffuses to the collection pipe. This water catchment method is also used to enhance water collection in an area where there is little water.

Proper Mulching Techniques

Posted by on Jan 5, 2016 in Permaculture | 0 comments

Every homeowner ought to learn some basic practices that are beneficial in the promotion of better tree and general plants’ health. Mulching is one of the practices that are commonly used in this sphere. However, one might ask, what are mulches or what is mulching?

Mulching is the process of placing materials on the surface of the soil in an effort to maintain the moisture in the soil and improve its conditions. Therefore, mulches are the materials that are placed on the ground. It is important to note that not all mulching practices will result in better health for the plants and trees at your home. There are best practices that are to be adhered to ensure that the benefits of mulching are enjoyed by the plants and homeowner. The advantages range from protection against certain plant diseases to improvement in soil fertility and moisture content among many others.

mulching-graphic

Someone may wonder why there needs to be any technique in the mulching process as it seems quite simple from the theoretical point. When mulch is deeper than is required on wet soils, there might be cases of root rot as there will be too much moisture being contained in the root zone. Another instance of improper techniques is the piling of mulch too close to the trunk of plants. This can cause the stem tissues to be stressed and result in the development of stem girdling roots or disease and insect problems in these areas.

Proper mulching is all about having to choose the right kind of mulch to be used and the application procedure. In order maintain consistency in achieving desired results when doing mulching, it is important to remember some of the following few techniques:

  • Undertake to know if there is enough drainage of the soil and if the plants are going to be negatively impacted by the type of mulch chosen.
  • Well-drained sites should be applied layers of mulch that are between 2- to 4- an inch or lesser for drainage in soils that is not as good. Mulches can be placed as far out as the crown of the plant with coarse mulches having the flexibility of being applied slightly deeper without any effect.
  • Mulches that are piled close to the stems of plants or tree trunks should be pulled back several centimeters to give the base of the trunk exposure. In this scenario where mulch already exists, it is advisable to break up the layers that might be matted and give the appearance a fresh look by use of a rake.

Water Resources Are Less In Total World

Although the water is not drinkable but the needs are more, water can be procured even from rain. Anyone can catch rain from home or from any building. Same time, awareness is very less now. Once there is a stage is waiting without water and searching for water. This stage should not be reached and it is very danger.

earth-water-distribution

The reason is the hands and entire body is catching virus and infection and bacteria all these are only against health. Same time, these are disappearing when the entire things are washed by water. The water is cleaning product as well same time the drinking water is very different. The natural water contains many bacteria and unwanted calories. If any person drinks the normal water later days he feels for the same, because only later days they are bringing side effects to the body.

How To Restore The River Water And Lake Water

The water is available in lake or river but it is now sure how long they are available to use.  The reason is under ground water is not in high position. Everyone is drilling the land up to one hundred to three and four hundred feet, later they find the water. At the same time, the green fields are developed the rain is possible the greens are producing vapour and these air reaches sky level and in some time it is easy for the cloud formation. Once the cloud or dark cloud is formed the natural rain is possible everywhere in the world there is not necessary to add silver nitrate in the sky to bring the water.

Artificial Rain Is Costly Affair For Every Country

Rain is natural at the same time; people found with the chemical help the rain could be availed. The chemical used for procuring rain is silver nitrate this product is almost the price of the bar silver and from this only a bit of rain could be had. So this process is very expensive process to have at any place. Therefore planning greens are total solution for obtaining rain naturally. The rain is automatically appears if he environment is total green. Only for this purpose all these social workers are informing every single to have a plant at home.

If everyone cares about green atmosphere, it is easy for all to get regular rain. In that case, all the lakes would be filled with rain water. Apart from this saving rain water program is very successful and many people use only rain water when there is no rain or no water is available to them by natural way. The permaculture assistance is ready to help for this matter. For that you can check our permaculture courses in usa.

With very simple money the rain water can be saved in the underground of the any building and just land. Even in plain land the rain water could be saved in the underground. Already many countries are constructing their buildings with the water storage from natural rain. Even in small home covered by sheet or any object can save water easily.

If you like the idea of gardening don’t be one of those guys, rather plant flowers in your garden and then deplore gardening because you work and you don’t get nothing from those flowers and/or exotic plants. That is not gardening that is floriculture. Floriculture is one kind of gardening, and the other kind is permaculture. You should understand the difference between those two.

Permaculture aims on raising permaculture systems ( like a garden, which is a small scale system ) that give you food. Now there are a lot of articles about permaculture designs and principles and such, so I will carefully avoid that topic. I will give you a quick run through some recipes you can make using products from your own permaculture garden. Permaculture is not just growing plants; just look at people like Vladislav Davidzon, founder of Permaculture Institute of North America, it is much more.

downloadKetchup is one of the condiments that is widely used. SO why buy ketchup that has who knows what mixed in ( you wouldn’t  believe what things they throw inside ) when you can make your own ketchup from your own backyard.  For homemade ketchup you need few things, a bit of vinegar, half a cup should do,  half of that of water, and some sweetener, maple syrup, sugar ( not in cubes ), agave, honey ( a quarter of a cup ) and tomatoes of course. Use blender to blend a cup worth of tomatoes and mix that with all the other things. For additional taste you can add an array of other things including garlic, pepper or onion. All this must be brought down to powder in order to add it. Boil this mix ( simmer it ) on low temperature for 20 minutes, or to be exact until it achieves consistency of the ketchup.

mayo-ingredientsMayonnaise from market and mayonnaise you can make will be similar but still different. There is something in things you make that market products simply don’t have. Only issue with homemade mayonnaise is that it can last up to five days only and after that it will spoil. Good thing about homemade mayonnaise among other things is that it can be made in five minutes. For homemade mayo you need eggs, oil, and a bit of acidic ingredient ( vinegar or lemon juice should do the trick ), add to that a bit of water and salt and blend it until it becomes mayo. If you want you can add other things to change the taste of regular mayo, you can add hotsauce or pesto among other things. You can make mayo without the egg if you want, but best option is making it with it.

2014-08-11-mustard-seed-healing-cancer-inflammation-2-fb-2Mustard also can be made from mustard seeds and few other things.  All you need for mustard are: mustard powder, mustard seeds, salt, vinegar and water. Other things can be added, like replacement for vinegar ( another acidic ingredient ) or some dried herbs and a bit oil for smoothness. You don’t have to cook or boil it, you just need to blend it to your preferable density.

Growing mulch

Posted by on Oct 4, 2015 in Do It Yourself, Growing Your Own | 0 comments

Every garden needs mulch, and if you are into gardening and you don’t know what is mulch then you are very uneducated and inexperienced in gardening no matter what anyone else says. Mulch is a perfect thing to aid you in taking care of your garden and it helps cut down work needed in a garden. If you want to know about many ways to make mulch just go on one of the courses in nature, there are many that are organized, I recommend those from Regenerative Leadership Institute and those from works of Vladislav Davidzon. You can’t make mistake there.

imagesNow, what is mulch, some of you may ask. Mulch is every material you use in your garden which is left to decompose and give your plants nutrients. Mulch can be made from anything bio-degradable from cartons and wood shavings to by-products from your plants. Everything that will degrade and turn into earth again is a mulch ingredient. There are few things in which will mulch will be of help apart from being a food for your herbs. It will help in preventing erosion of earth, and it will stop rain from causing it, it will thwart off the weeds. It will protect your plants from cold in winter, and from evaporation in summer. And it can provide moisture to plants cutting you water usage in half.

If you are experienced gardener you will use mulch and if you have bigger gardens you will have issues with finding enough mulch material. So I say why not produce it. Yes produce plants that will be used as a dinner for your plants, cannibalism at best.red-rubber-mulch

Planting legumes as a material instead of food is a good way to give quality mulch material to your other plants. You can plant them in between your other plants you want on your table. If you are interested in this kind of gardening you should try permaculture design course.

Another way of growing mulch is simply planting or not pulling out weeds. Weeds can tell us a lot about what our garden needs, and some of them with big leaves can provide rich nutrient base for our plants. Best way of doing this is leaving a part of your garden to weeds, and later pull them out and use them as mulch. With incredible speed that weeds grow you will have enough mulch material for the rest of your garden.

aquatic-20plants Another source of mulch are aquatic plants. They can’t infest your garden but are good for mulch. Cattails is a edible type of aquatic plant which is a good material for mulch. So devoting  few water ponds or pools for mulch material growth is a good way to secure a good mulch source.

Planting clover, or mustard in your garden where you grow edible plants is a silly idea is it not? Well it is a great idea in fact, for these plants are perfect source of food for your garden. They are a living mulch for your plants. While alive they will shelter your still small plants from forces of nature, and after your plants grow over them you can pull them out and use them as classic mulch.
